Effects of cigarette price increase on fresh food expenditures of low-income South Korean households that spend relatively more on cigarettes

•Smoking households spent less on food than non-smoking households.•Expenditure share of cigarettes increased for all smoking households after tax increase.•Smoking households increased cigarette expenditures and decreased food expenditures.•The poorest households that spent more on cigarettes decreased fresh food expenditures to continue smoking.
