Older adults with hypertension have increased risk of depression compared to their younger counterparts: Evidence from the World Health Organization study of Global Ageing and Adult Health Wave 2 in Ghana

•Older hypertensive patients had almost twice the prevalence of depression compared with younger patients•Older widowed hypertensives, those affiliated to no religion and those who rated their health status as bad were more likely to be depressed•Hypertensive patients with unhealthy lifestyle and the unemployed had significantly higher rate of depression•A comprehensive care package including psychological support for patients with hypertension at our health facilities may lower the risk of depression and improve patients’ overall health status
