Periosteal stripping in high ankle sprains: An association with osteonecrosis

•Periosteal stripping injury of the distal tibia is easily overlooked.•Tibial periosteal stripping may result in avulsion of the extra-osseous vasculature, leading to osteonecrosis.•The blood supply of the distal tibia is known to be tenuous, predisposing this area to ischemic injury.
