•Tenorite nanomaterials were synthesized by ultrasonic assisted method.•The prepared nanomaterials were used for treatment of black liquor effluents.•The treatment process was optimized using Taguchi experimental design.•TOC removal of 84% was achieved using nanomaterials under solar irradiation.
