•SBB solvent was used for CO2 capture via a gas-liquid membrane contactor.•The CO2 absorption mechanism of the SBB solvent was investigated.•Both CO2-active and CO2-inactive components were identified in the SBB solvent.•The interaction among different components was attributed to the nature of mixing.•Hydrophobic components in the SBB inhibited CO2 absorption in membrane contactor.
