•Bargaining resource rate is optimally efficient when the contractor is risk neutral.•An inefficient resource rate occurs when the contractor is the more risk averse party.•Contracts where the contractor takes all the risk given an optimal resource rate.•However, these contracts give lower utilities for the participants.
