•Patients with cirrhosis display a prothrombotic coagulation profile.•This is due to a relative decrease of natural anticoagulants compared with procoagulants.•In cirrhosis, PT and aPTT correlate with a prothrombotic state, and are inadequate as bleeding risk biomarkers.
