•Influence of a novel treatment using additives, citric acid and orthophosphoric acid on reactivated NiMo/Al2O3 determined.•Citric acid and orthophosphoric acid results in restoring catalytic activity.•Removal of NiMoO4 compounds and the formation of NiMoS phase type II.•Beneficial role identified in the HDS of DBT and of a straight-run gasoil.
