Production of pharmaceutical active recombinant globular adiponectin as a secretory protein in Withania Somnifera hairy root culture

•The multipurpose pharmaceutical production system was developed to improve the economic potential of W. Somnifera.•Optimizing the parameters affecting the production system increased the level of extracellular gAd by 13 folds.•The biological activity of recombinant gAd from W. somnifera was improved through transcriptional and translational optimization, so that its functional amount was 5.1 times higher than gAd produced from E. coli and 45 % lower than CHO cells.
