• Thermally deactivated Fe2(SO4)3/TiO2 (FeTi-T) was obtained by thermal treatment. • Fe2(SO4)3 decomposition causes Brønsted acid sites loss and catalyst deactivation. • The in situ recovery of FeTi-T is achieved by SO2 in the flue gas. • Fe2(SO4)3 is formed by SO2/O2 and Fe2O3 under NH3-SCR reaction conditions.
