•We study if the nature of recoveries in employment has changed over time.•Account for output gap uncertainty, for real-time data.•Significant changes in employment plucking and link between employment and output.•Slower recoveries in employment for most countries.•Cross-country comparisons show substantial heterogeneity across countries.
