Performance Evaluation of Aggressive Frequency Reuse Schemes in the Return Link of MultiBeam Satellites

Aggressive frequency reuse schemes like fractional frequency reuse schemes have been very popular in terrestrial cellular networks for a long time, with numbers of contributions to enhance them and make them more dynamic and flexible. They are also considered as good candidates for interference management of multi-beam satellites systems. However their performances have rarely been evaluated numerically in this context, and especially in the return link. In this article, we introduce a novel, simulation-based methodology to assess the performances of several aggressive frequency reuse schemes, well known in the terrestrial literature. To do so, we quantify several performance indicators such as the maximum throughput and the proportional fair optimal throughput of each scheme as well as their performances under simple uncoordinated and coordinated resource allocation approaches. Our performance evaluation relies on integer optimization to compute the upper bounds and extensive simulations on random scenarios.
