A Novel Camera Type for Very High Energy Gamma-Astronomy

Geiger-mode avalanche photodiodes (G-APD) are promising new sensors for light detection in Cherenkov telescopes. This paper presents the realization of a small-size module employing 144 G-APDs, serving as a prototype for a larger camera. Dedicated front-end electronics have been developed for signal summation and amplification. The data acquisition system is based on the Domino Ring Sampling (DRS) chip. Gain variations of the G-APDs due to temperature or background-light variations are compensated by a high-voltage feedback system.
