This paper describes the implementation of a programmable CMOS battery charger for Li-ion batteries with charging currents from 100mA up to 1.5A. All the functionality necessary to program and control the charger and the power device are fully integrated. The integrated circuit features a 3-bit digital interface to program a set of parameters, adding flexibility for the user to digitally configure, without any other external devices, the battery charger. This enables to charge a wide range of Li-ion batteries. The circuit also presents a 4-bit status bus interface to read-out all the relevant line status indicators of the charger by a microprocessor or a System-on-Chip (SoC). The integrated circuit occupies an area of 2.4mm and was fabricated in a 0.18μm, 5V CMOS technology.
