•One-year incidence rates of nursing home admission after a hip fracture, increased from 3.2% among 60-69 years old, up to 22.4% among patients above 90 years.•Median time from discharge to nursing home admission decreased with increasing age.•Solitary living and cognitive impairment were strongly associated with a high risk of nursing home admission.•Social factors and cognition are stronger predictors of nursing home admission than physical comorbidities regardless of age group.
