•Cerebellar fastigial nucleus lesions in juvenile rats affect adult behavior and neuronal activity.•Cognitive and affective functions are compromised.•An injury of the cerebellar fastigial nucleus early in life may compromize maturation of distinct neocortical regions.•The fastigial nucleus may contribute to the pathology of the cerebellar cognitive affective syndrome.
