•Girls less frequently reach WHO recommended levels of physical activity than boys.•Perceived barriers to physical activity are higher among girls than among boys.•The number of perceived barriers is an independent determinant of BMI.•Barriers are independent determinants of non-compliance with WHO suggestions.•New strategies to contrast barriers to physical activity among young girls are needed.
