摘要

•A commercially available exogenous internal control (Mengovirus) was implemented for diagnostic NGS based metagenomics.•The control does not affect the sensitivity or specificity of individual results.•Mengovirus specific realtime RT-PCR allows to validate viral nucleic acids extraction.•Normalized Mengovirus read counts allow to validate viral sequence data generation.
