To be or not to be your authentic self? Catering to others’ preferences hinders performance

•We examine how catering to another person’s interests influences performance.•We find that most people use catering in an attempt to make a good impression.•We find that compared to behaving authentically, catering harms performance.•Catering increases anxiety and feelings of instrumentality for the caterer.
