•The thirty-day readmission rate after status epilepticus was 15.0%.•Recurrent seizures were the most common reason for readmission, in 45.1% of the cases.•Readmitted patients were more likely to have multiple comorbidities, a longer length of stay, and discharge to a skilled nursing facility.
