Decontamination of surgical face masks and N95 respirators by dry heat pasteurization for one hour at 70°C

•The need for protective masks greatly exceeds their global supply during the current COVID-19 pandemic.•We established dry heat pasteurization method to disinfect surgical face masks and N95 respirators, which can be used at home and significantly resolve the current shortage of masks.•Dry heat at 60°C and 70°C for 1 hour can ensure the decontamination of masks while maintaining their filtering efficiency and shape for up to at least three rounds of heating.
