•Path-by-path based Mento-Carlo method was utilized in CBCT scatter correction.•By the advantage of the sampling scheme in gMMC, sparsely selecting the photon deposition pixels in the projection can speed MC scatter calculation.•The scatter estimation via MC simulation time of all cases was within 2.5 seconds
