•Aphid infestation up-regulated proteins involved in JA, ethylene and ROS pathway.•Exogenous JA decreased aphid reproduction in cucumber while up-regulated OPR11.•Aphid infestation up-regulated ethylene biosynthesis gene ACO and ethylene production.•Aphid infestation resulted in rapid accumulation of ROS in cucumber leaves.
