Impacts of land-cover changes on snow avalanche activity in the French Alps

•Tree-ring reconstructions highlight two trends in snow avalanche activity.•An apparent increasing trend is related to rapid afforestation after the passage of a destructive avalanche.•A real decreasing trend in avalanche activity is induced by forest expansion.•Forest colonization in the release areas and paths is explained by rural exodus and drives changes in avalanche activity.
