•A facile method: RF can be coated on the modified Ni(OH)2.•The key of coating: Ni(OH)2 is modified by cetyltrimethylammonium bromide.•Controllable synthesis: The thickness of RF can be tuned.•Interesting structure: Ni(OH)2@xRF looks like a carnation and RF is coated on Ni(OH)2 nanosheets.•Excellent performance: Ni(OH)2@xRF possesses enhanced specific capacitance and stability.
