•A lumped heat capacitance (0D) and thermal resistance network model is developed.•Heat generation from reactions and heat absorption from melting and evaporation are included.•Gas is generated by decomposition reactions and electrolyte vaporization.•After vent opening, compressible flow equations are used to model flow through the vent.•The model is used to estimate time-to-venting and time-to-thermal-runaway.
