•A new plasma pre-treatment is able to increase adhesion at the ceramic/adhesive interface.•Plasma pre-treated similar and dissimilar joints show excellent mechanical properties.•The plasma surface pre-treatment of SiC and Si3N4 is a non-expensive and user-friendly process.•The plasma technique offers the possibility of treating large and complex areas.
