Characteristics associated with later self-harm hospitalization and/or suicide: A follow-up study of the HUNT-2 cohort, Norway

•91 (0.14%) persons died because of SU during follow up.•332 (0.51%) were recorded with HDSH, and 9 (2.7%) of them died later because of SU.•Both the HDSH group and the SU group had more psychosocial problems.•The HDSH group had more somatic health problems and lower functional capacity.•Compared to SU, HDSH had more chronical illnesses and a higher use of health services.
