•Maternal exposures to Li and Sr are associated with the increase of GWGs during pregnancy.•Maternal inflammatory cytokines (IL-6 and GDF-15) are associated with both Li & Sr levels and increased GWG.•The effects of Li and Sr exposure on pregnant women and their offspring need to be given more attention.
