•Earliest responses to infection were observed at 90 days in sheep and goats.•Calves had more robust and sustained responses during the 12-month infection period.•Goats had higher expression of IL-4, IL-12, and IL-17 in antigen-stimulated PBMCs.•Overall, calves had the greatest level of MAP tissue infectivity and goats had the lowest level.
