•miR-429 deficiency reversely correlates with CRKL upregulation in ccRCC.•miR-429 suppresses the in vitro migration and invasion capacities of ccRCC cells.•CRKL is a direct functional effector of miR-429 in ccRCC cell invasiveness.•miR-429 reverses TGF-β-induced CRKL expression and malignancy of ccRCC cells.•miR-429-CRKL axis regulates ccRCC via SOS1/MEK/ERK/MMP2/MMP9 pathway.
