Unique three-dimensional structure of a fish mandible bone subjected to unusually high mechanical loads.

•We identify a novel bone structure located at the interface with the tooth in the black drum fish.•The novel structure is composed of arrays of aligned mineralized collagen fibrils separated by channels.•The novel structures are surrounded by disordered mineralized material.•FIB SEM of dry mineralized bone can provide valuable information .on collagen organization.
