•PM2.5 in central China was abundant in heavy metals and organic pollutants.•Bioinformatics analysis predicted a crucial role of oxidative phosphorylation.•ATP5F, NDUF, COX7A, and UQCR in charge of ATP syntheses were dysregulated.•Suppression of ATP synthesis induced necroptosis of BEAS-2B cells.•N-acetylcysteine alleviated necroptosis of BEAS-2B cells exposed to PM2.5.
