•Associations among PTSD symptom clusters and suicidal ideation (SI) were explored.•Negative alterations in cognitions and mood (NACM) most strongly correlated with SI.•NACM most strongly correlated with SI in veterans with probable PTSD.•Each NACM symptom was significantly correlated with SI.
