•This is the first study to investigate whether baseline insomnia impacts the antidepressant efficacy of repeated ketamine infusions in patients with unipolar and bipolar depression.•The high insomnia subgroup was more likely to respond and remit under six ketamine infusions than the low insomnia subgroup.•Patients with high insomnia had greater improvement than those with low insomnia during the repeated infusions of ketamine.
