Bariatric surgery is beneficial for cardiovascular in type 2 diabetes patients

Cardiovascular disease is the most important cause of morbidity and mortality in type 2 diabetes patients. Howevenr, only a few clinical studies of hypoglycemic drugs have shown cardiovascular protection. Research evidences showed that bariatric surgery improve cardiovascular events by not only reducing the incidence of obesity-related complications, but also ameliorating the levels of subclinical atherosclerosis and endothelial dysfunction markers, as well as the levels of inflammation and thrombus markers. This manuscript summarizes the clinical evidence and related mechanisms of bariatric surgery to reduce cardiovascular events in T2DM patients. Large-scale randomized controlled trials may help accumulate more evidence of cardiovascular disease benefits in T2DM patients undergoing bariatric surgery.
