Prescribed fire and natural canopy gap disturbances: Impacts on upland oak regeneration

•Prescribed fires reduced American beech saplings and red oaks of all size classes.•Single fires increased red maple large seedling, sapling, and midstory stems.•Multiple fires reduced red maple abundance and increased white oak group abundance.•Red oak group seedling density increased in naturally-formed canopy gaps.
