•Garnet shows dynamic fragmentation in a mid-crustal strike-slip fault/shear zone.•D-values (slope of particle size distribution) increase toward the shear zone core.•The zone with D-values ≥1.5, indicating dynamic fragmentation, is ∼70 m wide.•Coseismic damage is asymmetrically distributed around the shear zone core.
