Numerical and experimental investigation of sectional heater for improving multi-crystalline silicon ingot quality for solar cells

•A modified DS furnace with the sectional heater was proposed.•The sectional heater is useful for obtaining flat c-m interface shape.•Lower dislocation clusters density appeared in the ingot of modified furnace.•The conversion efficiency of solar cells increased by 0.1% in the modified furnace.
