•The expression of ANR and LAR genes and the content of proanthocyanidins were different in red and white mulberry fruits.•MnANR and MnLAR expression were induced by Botrytis cinerea, MeJA, drought, and UV light in Morus notabilis.•MnANR and MnLAR transgenic tobacco plants resisted to Botrytis cinerea.
