•Superficial lactic acid improves filler effect of sol-gel NPSiO2 in PLA matrix.•NPSiO2 nanoparticles incorporation did not affect the incorporation of cinnamaldehyde in PLA.•Functionalized NPSiO2 decrease the diffusion rate of cinnamaldehyde through PLA films.•NPSiO2 nanoparticles provide a tortuous path for oxygen diffusion.
