Mothers' competence profiles and their relation to language and socioemotional development in Chilean children at 12 and 30 months.

•Cluster analyses yielded three profiles: highly, average and poorly competent.•Highly competent mothers were older are highly educated.•Mothers improved their profiles between 12-month and 30-month assessment.•Children with highly competent mothers reached higher expressive language scores.•Children with highly competent mothers achieved higher socioemotional skills.
