The right visual field advantage for word processing is stronger in older adults.

•Laterality for word processing was compared between younger and older adults.•Older adults showed a stronger right visual half field advantage.•This effect was mostly driven by poorer performance in the left visual half field.•The left hemisphere may become more language dominant with aging.•Alternatively, interhemispheric transfer may deteriorate with aging.
