•Dual effects of lipopolysaccharide were found on osteoclastogenesis in vitro.•Lipopolysaccharide promoted osteoclasts differentiation only from RANKL primed cells.•Effects of autophagy and Wnt signaling were demonstrated in lipopolysaccharide induced osteoclastogenensis.•A crosstalk between autophagy and Wnt signaling was elucidated during osteoclast differentiation.
