•The Sepsityper kit protocol and short-term subculture protocol are both reliable and rapid methods.•Turnaround time, labor costs, and kit cost should be evaluated when an optimized protocol is selected.•The species of microbes should be considered when the short-term subculture protocol is used.•The performance of these two rapid protocols is associated with the TTP of blood cultures.
