Preparation of Phase change microcapsules-aerogels composites and the enhanced thermal properties

•Encapsulated phase change materials were composited with silica aerogels.•The synthesis was performed via in-situ sol-gel process combined with ambient pressure drying method.•The prepared PCCA has a desirable latent heat and phase change temperature.•PCCA showed enhanced thermal regulation properties than pure aerogels.
