•Relative expressions of genes involved in iron uptake and regulation were compared between fluoroquinolone-resistant and wild-type Campylobacter jejuni.•No distinct patterns were observed in the direction or magnitudes of the measured gene expressions among the strains.•No statistically significant differences in the expressions of the measured genes were observed between fluoroquinolone-resistant and wild-type Campylobacter jejuni.•Enhanced iron acquisition and regulation may not be a molecular mechanism behind the enhanced fitness of fluoroquinolone-resistant Campylobacter jejuni in the poultry environment.
