•18R-LPSO structure was firstly observed in the Mg96.5Gd2.5Zn1 alloy.•Lamellar LPSO structures induced sandwich-like distribution of fine DRXed grains in the cast-extruded Mg96.5Gd2.5Zn1 alloy.•Lamellar LPSO structures promote the nucleation of recrystallization in α-Mg matrix.
