Interactions between sulfide and reproductive phenology of an annual aquatic plant, wild rice (Zizania palustris)

•Root surface redox potential decreased during transitions in reproductive life stages of wild rice.•The initiation of seed production was delayed in plants exposed to elevated sulfate.•Elevated sulfate lead to a shorter period of seed production and fewer, smaller seeds.
