Effect of tungsten-containing additives (WB/ WSi2/ W) on ablation behavior of ZrB2-SiC coating

•The influence of tungsten-containing additives on the ablation resistance of ZrB2-SiC based coatings was firstly reported.•Great reduction of surface temperature and disappearance of SiC-depleted layer were observed.•The ablation mechanism of ternary composite coating and the function of W-contained additives were analyzed.
